Dental Insurance—To Buy, or Not to Buy?

dentistOne of the plans MOST often asked of us here at IGO is “how much is dental insurance?”, and “is it worth buying?”

When I started in the insurance industry almost ten years ago, NO ONE was asking for it. Many people were offered great benefit plans through their employer, so it wasn’t a need on the private market.  Others might have suffered a financial hardship almost ten years ago with the foreclosure crisis….and dental insurance was considered a “luxury” that many simply weren’t able to afford.

Today, we are seeing not only families prioritizing preventative dental care, but those who are enrolled in Medicare and retired—and at IGO, we believe in assessing each situation carefully to ensure that the plan will offer a true benefit, for the premium.

We also believe that if you don’t understand your coverage, you won’t use it to maximize the benefit, so education is a priority to us!

Most dental insurance plans require that you use a “network provider”, so one of our first questions to you will be “Who is your dental provider?”.  We want to find a plan that will first be in network with your preferred dentist, but if you don’t have one, there are a number of plans available in our area starting at just over $19/month that will cover those cleanings and check-ups on day one, no waiting period.

Finally, know that dental insurance has its limitations—many have waiting periods for major services, and will offer from $500-$2500 for an annual benefit.  If you’ll commit to seeing your dental provider twice a year for prevention, you’ll find that these plans are often worth what you’re paying into it, and will save you a bundle should you need an extraction or a filling!
