5 Design Trends to Toss for 2018

I’ve always been particularly obsessed with design and décor…I can certainly leave whatever work ailments I have behind and pretend it doesn’t exist the second my hands get to forming a new design on a wall in my house.  It all seems to begin with a few nights plopped on the sofa staring at the same space in dismay until one day, like a certain drop of a bomb, it hits me that “something’s gotta go”.

Here we go—grab Pinterest, create a design board, and we’re off.  And then it occurred to me that if I am to re-create a design space, I need to be on top of my game—to find something NEW, INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE…something no one is doing yet.

Enter new search…”2018 home trends”.

So I’ve brought you full circle to the course my brain has taken over the last few weeks and feel it my duty to reveal some of the research I’ve found in regard to design trends and what the experts say we should “throw out”, and “bring home” for 2018. Here’s a peek at just a few design trends we need to say goodbye to, much as we’ll miss them:

  1. I know there are some of you who have YET to replace your countertops with that familiar speckled granite but let me warn you—IT’S OUT—as in people are ever so tired of granite.  Enter QUARTZ—with a beautiful variety of patterns—you’ll want to go this route if you have any plan of remodeling in the near future.
  2. Stainless Steel appliances. This is both sad and refreshing all at once to me—stainless steel has created an OCD monster among clean freaks with the constant cleaning of fingerprints, but it’s such a clean, beautiful and unimposing accent to the home.  However, next year we’ll start to see COLOR in those appliances—from bold to vintage, and even some paneled appliances to blend beautifully with cabinetry and design.
  3. Closed Shelving. I am just not sure I can deal with this new trend—we’ve already begun to see it in newer homes, but the idea of my dishes being on display to the heart of the home is just too exposing to me. But, the evidence shows us that the open shelving concept will take off, with simple lines and convenience and people finding beautifully designed ways to now display their dishes, rather than hide them.
  4. Overly designed spaces. There is a Danish word “hygge” which suggests “simplicity”—the goal is that one may achieve it by taking pleasure in the small things in life—by placing things in your home that have meaning and purpose, and not clutter….choosing to live more simply with less THINGS will be a 2018 super trend.
  5. Well, again, this will be tough for me as my favorite color is gray—the perfect accent to ANY color, in my opinion.  However, the pale neutrals such as taupes and creams and grays are on their way out, and re-entering our homes are bolder and warmer colors, including GREEN, even just as one accent wall in a space.  Green is finding its way back in the home in a big way, from art to succulents to a bold sofa.

So there you go, predictions for next year’s design trends that you may choose to take or leave behind…either way, keep in mind that ultimately your home’s your own, and it should be filled with pretty things that you love, first and foremost.
