Insurance Agents: What to look for in an agency
When looking for an agency, the options an agent has can feel overwhelming. As an agent, you want to feel comfortable in your work environment and choose somewhere with enough resources to help you launch (or just step up) your career, but you also don’t want an agency so large that you just feel like one of many, and don’t get the individual attention & training you deserve.
Here are some tips from our agents at IGO on what to look for to find the perfect workplace fit:
Community involvement
With insurance sales, referrals come from being a part of the community. Look for an agency that participates in local events and has a local presence. This will help you to meet more people & get more referrals outside of your personal network.
Offer multiple product lines
Working for a company that sells more than 1 product, means more opportunities. Being an independent agent means that when a prospect comes to you for an insurance quote, you can give them multiple quotes and ultimately, the most competitive price.
Great client reviews
If customers don’t love the business, why should you? Customer reviews can tell you a lot about what the culture at the business is like.
Networking opportunities
You don’t want to be thrown into an agency that doesn’t want to help you out. Before committing, ask about what your options are for networking once you work there.
Continued Training
Insurance laws and rules are ever-changing. Top agents are top because they stay educated. A good agency will make sure that all of their agents are up to date and continually learning.
Brand Presence
Does the business have local advertising? A social media Presence? Do people in the community recognize the name? Working for a business that is too small might just mean extra work for you to help get the name out there. On the other hand, working for a large company doesn’t have the local, small business feel that makes most clients comfortable.
Mission Statement
Check out the agency’s website and read their mission statement (if it’s not there, that’s a problem!). You should know what the company values and it should jive with your own morals & values.
