There Is Still Time — Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Summer will soon end, children will be back in school and family vacation season will slow down. Retirees have more flexibility and often prefer to travel off-season to avoid crowds or find good deals. However, there is still plenty of time to get away and explore your favorite national park, city or country.

Wherever you choose to travel, in your state, the greater US, or overseas, protect your investment by securing travel insurance. Making this decision before you go allows flexibility to handle unexpected situations quickly should you or someone in the family get sick or injured.

According to CNBC.COM, flights are up 25%, outpacing inflation, deals are still available if you can be flexible or want to consider traveling abroad. This month, discount sites like Priceline.com, Travelocity.com, or Cheapflights.com list flights from the East Coast to Los Angeles for $277 with only a month’s notice. Of course you could bundle your flight with a hotel and enjoy a three-night trip to Cancun for under $500.

According to Afar magazine, reasonable rates on cruise ships are most affordable if you purchase in January or February. Good deals are often available on holidays like Labor Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Once you decide “where” you want to go, consider “who” can help with insurance. The best place to start is with your local insurance agent to find available options.

Do your homework.

Be prepared to give your agent a list of your preferred needs. The best-rated policies cover emergency medical evacuation, weather, baggage problems, travel delays, and even “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) can be added as an upgrade.

Read reviews.

Once you have a quote, read consumer reviews to ensure your chosen company delivers on its promises.

Consider your budget.

Find insurance that fits your family’s budget. You may want trip cancellation coverage but not emergency medical insurance coverage. The type of travel and where you travel will determine what you need. Keep in mind that added coverage affects the price you will pay.
